I Want To Get Even

Don’t insist on getting even; that’s not for you to do. “I’ll do the judging,” says God. “I’ll take care of it.”  Romans 12:19

Bitterness has to be one of the most destructive sins in the lives of Christians. I have seen far too many people who have allowed it to live so long in their lives that when you come in contact with them there was little more than a skeleton of a person left. They were empty of compassion, joy, patience, love and the other gifts of the indwelling presence of God.

Happiness cannot find a home in a bitter heart, even when it perceives to have gotten even. Certainly all of us have received blind blows that crippled us for a moment and sowed the seed of bitterness but praise God for His surgery that removed it before it could grow and produce the fruit of a destroyed life and a failed person.

This desire to get even, to blame others, and to always know that we are right and no one else has an opinion that matters is going to so deeply root into the foundation of our land that we will wake up one day with nothing but a shell of ourselves and our nation left.

Help me God to avoid my desire to ‘get even’, make the ‘judgment’, and ‘pronounce the sentence.’ Help me Lord to leave those matters in your hands for you alone know all there is to know about each one of us. Thank you for forgiving me and help me to live in a forgiving way toward others.
