Blessed Am I

Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Matthew 5:3
Remember Jesus is not praising poverty of things and needs; He is speaking of poverty of the spirit. My translation is ‘When we realize that without Jesus there is nothing of value that we are able to use to trade Him for our salvation. Then we are able to receive His gift.’ Barclay translates this verse thus: O the bliss of the man who has realized his own utter helplessness, and who has put his whole trust in God; for thus alone he can render to God that perfect obedience which will make him a citizen of the Kingdom of Heaven. Our world is built around things so very much that it is difficult for us to get into the heart of this verse and its message. The word poor stabs our hearts and turns us off. No one wants to be poor and no one can achieve much of an understanding until they come to realize that Christ is speaking of us realizing so clearly that nothing we have is of any value that we could trade to God for our salvation. This spiritual poverty brings us into complete dependence upon Jesus and thus our salvation unfolds before us. We are so rich in things that we often forget that the riches that we must have when we die are not the things of this world which we will leave but the glory of being with Him forever. We will be Rich in His forgiveness and relationship.
