We Honor Them

On the first anniversary of 911 my wife Carole said that I should help the children on the campus of the Tennessee Baptist Children’s Home in Brentwood, Tennessee remember the fallen and observe the day.  Our campus put up more than 3,000 crosses in the shape of a great cross. White crosses for the civilians, red for the firefighters, blue for the police and emergency workers, and gold for the few children who were killed.

Our memorial was noticed by all four of the local TV stations in Nashville and I appeared at least once on the evening news of each of the stations. The Fox Television stations in Nashville interview me and asked why we had put the crosses in the shape of a cross?  I answered because we believe that true healing comes at the foot of the cross. I told the reporter after the interview that I understood that he could not use that statement but to my surprise that night Fox News opened its telecast with a picture of the great cross of crosses on our campus and with my voice over saying, “We believe that true healing comes at the foot of the cross.”

The morning of our memorial service all the Nashville TV stations covered it live and our community responded with a great gathering. Our staff, who had worked so hard, and all of our children will never be the same because of that day in September 01.

In the tears of our sorrow we shared the peace of Christ with a hurting world.
